How Cardiff search works

Cardiff is not one search market.

Google ranks local results partly on distance: how far the person searching is from the business, or from the area it serves. In a city the size of Cardiff, that has a big effect. A business can sit in the Map Pack for someone searching in Roath and be missing for someone typing the same words in Llanishen, Ely or St Mellons.

Rank tracking across a grid of points over the city shows how uneven this is. Many businesses rank well near their own address and drop away further out, while a few hold their position across most of the city. Those few usually have the complete profiles, the steady reviews and the matching website pages to back it up.

Across the city

Different districts, different customers.

Cardiff’s districts are close together on a map but very different as markets. Search behaviour follows the housing, and the housing changes quickly from one area to the next.

  • Victorian and Edwardian terraces fill much of Roath, Cathays, Canton, Grangetown and Splott. Older roofs, original features, damp, period electrics and tight on-street parking all shape the work and the questions customers ask.
  • Flats and newer developments are common around Cardiff Bay and Butetown, where jobs often involve managing agents, communal areas and access rules.
  • Student and rented housing is concentrated around Cathays and parts of Roath, which brings landlords and letting agents into the market for many trades.
  • Larger family homes in areas such as Cyncoed, Lisvane, Llandaff, Radyr and Rhiwbina tend to bring extensions, renovations and planned upgrades rather than quick fixes.
  • Estates on the edges of the city, from Pentwyn and St Mellons in the east to Ely and Fairwater in the west, each have their own mix of house types and their own nearby competitors.

A trade business that knows which of these it serves best can write pages, choose services and ask for reviews that match. That beats trying to rank everywhere for everything.

How Cardiff customers search

Three ways the same job gets searched.

Customers in Cardiff tend to search in one of three ways, and a business needs to show up for all of them:

  • With no place name at all. Someone types the job, such as an emergency electrician or a boiler repair, and Google uses their location to decide which businesses to show. This is where distance matters most.
  • With the city name. Searches that include "Cardiff" are often made by people planning ahead, or searching for a property they are not standing in.
  • With a district name. Searches such as a roofer in Roath or a plumber in Whitchurch tell Google exactly where the work is.

The profile handles the first kind most directly. The second and third rely more on your website: service pages that mention Cardiff naturally, and pages or sections that name the districts you really cover.

Older property and local rules

Why local knowledge shows in the content.

Cardiff Council manages a number of conservation areas, including Llandaff, Cathedral Road and Roath Park. In areas like these, work such as replacement windows, roofing materials, front boundaries and extensions can need extra care and sometimes permission.

A homeowner in one of those streets is often looking for a tradesperson who already understands that. If that is genuine experience for your business, it belongs on your website, in plain words. If it is not, it should not be claimed.

The same goes for the rest of the city's housing. A page that talks about the work you actually do on Victorian terraces, modern flats or larger family homes reads as written by someone who knows Cardiff, because it was.

What it means for you

What it takes to show up in more of Cardiff.

Start with an accurate base

Your Google Business Profile anchors where you show up strongest. The address, or the service areas if you hide it, should reflect where you really work. Pretending to be somewhere you are not tends to end in a suspended profile.

Expect competition from outside the city

Plenty of businesses based in the Vale of Glamorgan, Caerphilly or Newport list Cardiff as a service area. In the Map Pack you are up against them as well as Cardiff businesses, so it pays to know who actually appears for your main searches.

Make relevance and prominence do more of the work

You cannot change how far a searcher is from you. You can make it unmistakable what you do and that customers rate you: a complete profile, reviews that keep coming in, consistent listings, and a website with clear pages for your main services and the parts of Cardiff you cover.

Why it helps to be based here

What being in Cardiff Bay means in practice.

Being based in the city means the Cardiff Map Pack is the one i look at most. When i check rankings for a Cardiff search, the grid covers the same streets your customers search from. The competitor checks look at the businesses that actually appear here, not a national average.

It does not mean anything more than that. AKVelora is one person at one address. There is no Cardiff team, no showroom and no list of local clients to point to on this page. What there is: a clear method, applied to the Cardiff market, starting with a free audit of where your business stands today.

Questions

Common questions.

Do you only work with Cardiff businesses?

No. AKVelora is based in Cardiff and works across the eight areas listed on the areas page, and with businesses further afield where the work is a good fit.

Can you get my business into the top 3 across all of Cardiff?

Nobody can promise that. Distance from the searcher matters, and Google decides the results. The aim is to remove what is holding you back and widen the area where you show up.

My business is just outside Cardiff. Can i still rank in the city?

You can appear for Cardiff searches, especially near the edge of the city closest to you. Your profile should show your real location and list Cardiff as a service area if you work there.

What does the free audit cover for a Cardiff business?

Your profile, website, listings and reviews, plus a look at the businesses appearing in the Cardiff Map Pack for your main searches.

Should i list every Cardiff district as a service area on my profile?

List the areas you really cover. Google allows up to 20 service areas, and naming Cardiff itself covers the city as a whole. Districts you never travel to should not be on the list.
